2009 Recruitment Camp

2nd Penang Company recruitment camp for 2009 were held on the 19th, 20th and 21st of March 2009 at Hutan Lipur, Teluk Bahang. It was participated by around 50 members of boys and girls of the 2nd Penang Company. The camp commandant for this camp is W/O Loh Kar Heng assisted by the camp coordinator Cpl. Kenneth Chang and also the rest of the committee members. Before we leaved for the campsite, campers were assigned into six groups. Each group consists of an NCO, a group leader and tent leader.

Day 1
Our bus departed from Wesley Methodist Church at 11am and arrived at the campsite around 12pm. They played an ice breaker which started the ball rolling. The atmosphere was more relaxed after the ice breaker as most of them has got to know each other. After the ice breaker, Cpl Kenneth introduced a song called "I want to be your friend" and everyone enjoyed the song. There's also action to the song so everyone followed the action. At 1.00pm, all the campers get ready with their kitchen utensils for the self-cooked lunch. This is a special lunchtime where they had to cook their own food. The best part is they had to start a fire using charcoal. Every group were given a time frame of 2 hours for them to complete their cooking. Indeed, every group were able to complete their meal in the given time. Good job to all campers.

After they finished their lunched, the next program awaits them is the treasure hunt. The hunt was very challenging not only mentally but physically as well because they have to roam around the whole campsite to search for clues. At 5pm, all the campers were taught to build tents. Sir Victor and a few NCOs' demonstrated to all the campers on how to set up the tent. They listen attentively because they feared that there will be no place to sleep at night if they do not know how to build a tent. Dinner were served at around 6pm and all campers were to sing the table grace before every meal. And after dinner, campers proceed to the hall for the opening ceremony of the 2009 Recruitment Camp. A short speech by Lt. Ch'ng Ewe Hong and after that the MC of the day, Cpl. Philip Aw called upon three officers, Lt. Ewe Hong, Lt. John Fabian and also W/O Loh Kar Heng to officially start the camp by popping party poppers. Thereafter, it was time for the worship session and a sharing from our invited speaker, Pastor Christopher Choy who is also the Captain of 1st BMJ company. At 10.30pm, it was the time for war game which make quite a lot of them alarmed because they do not know what they are going to do. After Cpl. Kenneth briefed them about the game and how it goes, they calmed down a little bit. But there are still some of them who are afraid because it was very dark. After the war games, it is lights out. Last Post was played by three of our buglers, Lt. John Fabian, W/O Loh Kar Heng and Cpl. Kenneth Chang. The campers then went back into their tent and have a good sleep.

Day 2
The campers were made to wake up at 6.30am to go for their morning exercise. After the morning exercise, they moved to the hall for the morning worship and a short sharing by Ms. Noreen Khoo. Posteriorly it was breakfast time for all campers. Then, the campers get to rest their mind and body before they fare to Sungai Tukun which is quite far away from the campsite and they have to wend by walking there. They had a lot of fun at Sungai Tukun. Let the pictures do the talking.

After they came back from Sungai Tukun, they were weary but very excited. So it is worth the long and tired journey. Dinner is next on the schedule. And after dinner, they headed to the hall for a worship and last session of sharing by Pastor Christopher Choy. During the alter call, 3 of the campers accepted Christ as their Lord and Saviour. All glory to God. Subsequently, it is the much anticipated night hike. We can see mixed emotions when we informed the campers about night hike. Some were very excited, but some were afraid of the dark. After the hike, every campers felt they were very brave because they overcome their biggest fear. They were getting tired so it is lights out at 1.00am.
Day 3
The campers again have to wake up at 6.30am for their morning exercise to get them ready for the day. Today will be less stressful because it was the last day. The campers end the camp with a few games. They packed and went back home very excited.
